Description
Three historical figures—Fridtjof Nansen, the Norwegian Arctic explorer whose ship was intentionally frozen into the polar ice cap during 1893-1896; Peter the Great, the Russian tsar who founded Saint Petersburg in 1703; and Benjamin Franklin, the American diplomat who signed both the Declaration of Independence in 1776, and the Constitution in 1787—return to our world today.
They appear on the deck of a modern Norwegian research vessel sailing on the Arctic Ocean near the edge of the polar ice cap. When Nansen learns that the polar ice cap is melting, he is shocked. When he learns why it is melting, he is outraged.
As the three visitors—each a great scientist in his time—learn about climate change, the Problem, and clean energy, the Solution, we look at our troubled world today through their eyes. Each has a unique viewpoint, a unique wisdom, to share with us.
We then follow them as they visit their homelands today: a school and a cemetery in Saint Petersburg, Russia; Independence Hall in Philadelphia; a children’s parade in Oslo, and Nansen’s ship, the Fram, in an Oslo museum. Nansen, the humanitarian who worked with refugees, also visits a modern refugee camp on the Greek island of Chios.
The Beginning of the End of the World is a story unlike any you have ever read. With vibrant, crystal-clear writing, this novel dramatizes the great challenges which confront us today, around the planet. The novel also offers hope—a most realistic hope—if we are ready to break free from the shackles of the 20th century, and to build the Renaissance of the 21st century.
