The King, who wallows in his mead, remains willfully oblivious to Merlin’s secret preparations for war.

His counselor, the Fool, tries to awaken the King.  But the Fool has his own troubles: should he marry the Milkmaid, who is ready to start a family, or should he pursue his vague calling . . . to become a writer?

The Milkmaid finally makes her decision . . . and the Fool discovers what he has lost.  Desperate, he lifts the knife which he will plunge into his own heart . . . but he is stopped by the King who finally rises to the occasion.

The King sets the Fool upon the path of his destiny . . . then turns his awakened attention to sly Merlin, and to the hideous Queen.
